Typhoon rain seemed to go away in the late night and it was fine when I woke up at AM5:00 in Hagi city’s hotel. Only one thing I concerned about was whether the train was moving. Original plan was I should have been in Masuda city at that time after reachig Nagato city and coming back to Masuda by train. But due to the typhoon I had to stay at Hagi city on 1st day and had to go to West(Nagato) first on 2nd day. So if train operation is still suspending, I can’t reach Izumo city (140km N-East from Masuda) on 2nd day.

But I can’t abandon going West(to Nagato) in order to complete one round of JPN main island. So I started to West at AM6:00(pic.1). It was about 20km route toward Nagato and soon up hill started and after 10km the downhill began(pic.2).

Only passing one mountain, I came to Nagato city(pic.3). I could see a shiny sunrise behind me (pic.4). I cycled further 4km to train station and asked the person who was doing something there. He was not sure whether the train was operating. If it was in operation, I could get on it and go back to Masuda in 2hrs, so I would be able to reach Izumo for 140km cycling by evening. But I felt big risk to wait for train coming. Then finally I went back on a same road to Hagi city first. There was a hope that the train was in operation btw Hagi and Masuda city…

When I came back to Hagi city, it was already AM9:00. Though I was anxious about the train operation, I was lucky to visit old Samurai town(pic.5). This street is chosen as the one of the 100 best roads in Japan.

Now I had to check the train operation at the station since in such state of emergency, I could not know the real situation through web site nor phone call to a big station. I came to East Hagi station and asked the person in charge but the answer was shocking. “Today all trains are suspended".

I had some options. Fisrt one was giving up the rest plan and go back to Tokyo from Hagi airport. But the flights from Hagi were fully booked until Tuesday(I had to be in Tokyo on Monday). So I brace myself to cycle 60km from Hagi to Masuda and 140km from Masuda to Izumo within this day. I’d already cycled for 42km in the morning, and I’ve already felt cumulative fatigue from 1st day.

But I thought I could accomplish total 242km if I cycle slowly though I reach Izumo late night. So I sometimes stopped and enjoyed beautiful view(pic.6).

The view from this route which ran along the coast was nice(pic.8). But there were many up and donws which made me unconfident about accomplishing the rest sections. I reached Masuda city around PM1:00 but I’d decided not to continue furthre and to ask Taxi to take me to Oda-city, 30km behind Izumo city so that I would be able to catch up the original plan. It was the second best PlanB in this trip.

Someday I’ll come back to this remaining 100km section from Masuda to Oda and complete one round of JPN main island!!
