Safety ⭐ (R-10)
I scored this route just one star⭐ even if it does not rain. The R-10 from Nobeoka city to Miyazaki city was easy for just cycling but too dangerous for cyclists. The road was basically narrow and many big tracks were running. Besides the road was not well maintained, so I often used pedestrian way but it was not well maintained either.
And to make matters worse, R-10 seldom came close to the coast. So I had to cycle on a dangerous road without any spectacle in the heavy rain.
According to the taxi driver when I went to the airport in next day, the route from Miyazaki city to southern area (Nobeoka is north area) would be nice for cycling…
When I woke up at AM6:00, the sky around Takachiho was cloudy, not rainy. But it certainly would rain until noon, so I had to gain as much as possible before rain starting. The route started basically with down hill along R-218. But after 40min from the start, the rain started. And the temperature was very low in this season, around 13 degree C.
It rained so hard from the beginning, I decided to take a rest at Nobeoka city which was not so big city, so I headed to station building, where I found Starbucks.
Already my suite was wet enough and felt cold but I waited rain diminishing watching at the rain cloud rader for 1 hour(pic.3). I redumed when the rain weakened but soon the rain got heavier.
I just cycled without any mind, only taking care of the safety in a boring site. I just came to a road side station in Tsuno town at noon. I felt coldness by wetty suite, shoes. So I ordered hot type Soba with tempura rice bowl. But still I felt coldness.
The outside was still heavy rain. So there again I took another 1 hour rest to wait rain weakened. Then resumed cycling around PM2:00. According to the weather forecast, the rain will stop around PM3:00 and it will sunny in the evening.
The forecast was right. Around PM3:00, the rain suddenly stopped(pic.5). and the Western sky started clearer(pic.6). I’d already cycled for 120km in the rain, without any interesting site. When I reached the hotel in the city center of Miyazaki at PM4:00, I could see sun light.
After removing mud on my bike roughly and packing my bike in the carry bag, I took a shower and went to the city center for dinner. Even though it was Monday, some good Japanese tavern were fully booked. I barely kept my seat at Nabura who served Miyazaki local chicken and beef as well as sea food. I ordered Miyazak local beer, and later I enjoyed Miyazaki Shochu.
Next day was clearly fine day but I had to go back to Tokyo. From the city center to airport, it took 20min with \2300- by taxi. Along the main street, I could see tall palm trees planted 50 years ago to make Miyazaki a tourist city. Next time I will cycle from Miyazaki airport to south area to enjoy the real Miyazaki spectacles.
